NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Friesan Fire surged ahead and won the Louisiana Derby by more than seven lengths Saturday, solidifying his credentials as a leading contender for the Kentucky Derby.

Favored from the morning line until post time, Friesan Fire pulled into the lead coming out of the final turn on a sloppy track at the Fair Grounds Race Course to complete a clean sweep of his last three starts.

The 3-year-old colt also won the Lecomte and Risen Star stakes at the Fair Grounds earlier this year.

Papa Clem was second and Terrain finished third, with other Derby hopefuls Giant Oak fourth and Patena eighth in the nine-horse field.
