ARCADIA, CALIF. (AP) - Smooth-striding Pioneerof the Nile romped to a 1 1/4-length victory in Saturday’s $200,000 San Felipe Stakes, taking another successful step toward the Santa Anita Derby and the Run for the Roses.

Saddled by three-time Kentucky Derby winning trainer Bob Baffert and ridden by Garret Gomez, Pioneerof the Nile had an easy trip against a mostly outclassed group of five other 3-year-olds.

Feisty Suances finished second, one length in front of Jeranimo.

Pioneerof the Nile carried 122 pounds, five pounds more than each of the others, and was clocked in 1:43.35 for the 1 1-16th mile over the artificial track.

Sent off at 1-9, Pioneerof the Nile paid $2.60, $2.10 and $2.10. Feisty Suances returned $5.80 and $3.80, and Jeranimo paid $4.
