MARION, S.D. (AP) - Authorities say a sheriff’s deputy has been been fatally shot by a 19-year-old man in a South Dakota farmhouse.

The Turner County sheriff’s office says 33-year-old Deputy Chad Mechels was on duty Sunday when he was shot at a farmhouse west of Marion. It says Ethan Johns of Marion surrendered later that day and is being held in the Sioux Falls jail.

It says Johns was armed with a deer rifle when he turned himself in.

A person who answered a call to John’s listed number in Sioux Falls said it was no longer his number. It was not immediately clear whether he had a lawyer.

Marion is about 30 miles southwest of Sioux Falls.
