PORT CHARLOTTE, FLA. (AP) - Pedro Alvarez showed off his power, and Tom Gorzelanny made another bid for a spot in Pittsburgh’s rotation.

Picked second overall in last year’s draft, Alvarez hit a long homer in the ninth inning Sunday that helped the Pirates rally for a 7-7 tie with the Tampa Bay Rays in 11 innings.

After Alvarez’s three-run shot pulled Pittsburgh within a run, Garrett Jones connected off Joe Nelson to tie it.

Gorzelanny allowed two runs and five hits in three innings during his fourth spring training start. The left-hander is trying to become the Pirates’ fifth starter this season.
