KABUL (AP) - The U.S. military says a raid in southern Afghanistan has left five militants dead.

The military says in a statement the Sunday operation in Kandahar province by Afghan special forces and U.S. coalition troops targeted a network supporting foreign fighters and moving weapons.

Southern Afghanistan is the center of the Taliban-led insurgency, which has made a comeback in the last three years after the hard-line Islamic militia’s initial defeat in the U.S. invasion in 2001.

Thousands of new U.S. troops are joining British, Canadian and Dutch forces in southern Afghanistan.
