CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA (AP) - Australia’s defense chief says a ninth Australian soldier has been killed in Afghanistan.

Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston says the soldier was shot and killed in a firefight with 20 Taliban insurgents in Uruzgan province.

The name of the soldier killed Monday was not immediately made public.

Australia joined the U.S.-led attack that unseated the Taliban regime in late 2001, and now has about 1,000 troops in Afghanistan.
