CLEVELAND (AP) - The Mid-American Conference has named Jon Steinbrecher as its new commissioner.

Steinbrecher comes to the MAC after serving six years as commissioner of the Ohio Valley Conference. He’ll replace Rick Chryst, who announced in January that he is stepping down when his contract runs out June 30. Chryst has served as MAC commissioner since 1999.

Western Michigan president John Dunn, who headed a search committee, said Monday that Steinbrecher is a proven talent with excellent administrative and academic credentials.

While with the Ohio Valley Conference, Steinbrecher increased the conference’s national television coverage by negotiating a five-year contract extension with ESPN. The 2005 OVC men’s basketball tournament semifinal was the first sporting event televised on ESPNU.
