WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama says the homecoming for the troops returning from Iraq will be a “true test” of the nation’s commitment to its veterans.

He says they will need support for the physical, mental and economic challenges they will face once they are home.

Obama commented on the 20th anniversary of the decision to elevate the Department of Veterans Affairs to Cabinet status. He said that in making the decision, President George H.W. Bush said the agency’s mission was so vital that it deserved a seat at the table with the president.

Obama said he could not agree more.

Obama has announced plans to end the Iraq war by the middle of next year and bring home most troops.
