VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA (AP) - The Vancouver Whitecaps are expected to be introduced soon as the second Canadian MLS franchise.

Bob Lenarduzzi, the Whitecaps president, said he expects some sort of announcement prior to the MLS season opening Thursday night in Seattle.

Will Kuhns, MLS director of communications, said the league has indicated in the past it would like to have the new franchises named before the 2009 season begins.

The Whitecaps, who currently play in the United Soccer Leagues first division, are one of the four remaining groups hoping to be awarded one of two MLS franchises for the 2011 season.

Ottawa, Portland and St. Louis have also applied for a franchise.

MLS already has a team in Toronto.
