KEMPTON PARK, ENGLAND (AP) - Mafaaz has won a race at Kempton Park to earn an automatic berth in the Kentucky Derby on May 2.

The 3-year-old chestnut colt defeated 13 rivals in the $115,000 Kentucky Derby Challenge Stakes on Wednesday, and gains one of the coveted 20 spots for the Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky.

The colt is trained by John Gosden, who spent most of the 1980s in the United States.

Mafaaz was making his third a career start, and first in 2009. Mafaaz held off a late challenge by Spring of Fame to win the 1 1/8-mile race over Kempton’s all-weather track.
