BRISTOL, TENN. (AP) - NASCAR driver Jeff Burton has criticized Congress over employee bonuses paid by troubled insurance giant AIG.

Burton says he wishes political leaders would come forward and admit they made a mistake in not putting tighter restrictions on the bailout money AIG received.

He also says AIG should not have paid the bonuses and employees should not have accepted any bonuses. AIG has received $182.5 billion in federal bailout money, and handed out $165 million in employee bonuses.

Burton made the comments Friday at Bristol Motor Speedway, where he will race in the Sprint Cup Series race in Tennessee on Sunday.

Burton is a Republican from Virginia and has said he’s interested in running for office when his NASCAR career is over.
