LUANDA, ANGOLA (AP) - The Portuguese news agency LUSA reports two people were trampled to death in a stampede at a sports stadium before Pope Benedict XVI addressed young people on the Angolan leg of his first African pilgrimage.

LUSA cites an unidentified source at a local hospital as saying the man and woman were dead on arrival at the hospital.

The agency says eight other people injured in the crush were hospitalized with minor injuries, and 10 people were given medical assistance at the site.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, says he is aware of the report but could not confirm it. He says neither the Vatican nor local organizers had any information about the reported stampede.
