PEORIA, ARIZ. (AP) - Mike Sweeney’s chances of making the Seattle Mariners’ roster on opening day keep improving.

Sweeney, a non-roster invitee who is attempting a comeback after having surgery on both knees in June, had two hits and an RBI in Seattle’s 8-5 win over an Oakland Athletics split squad Saturday.

Ken Griffey Jr. doubled and scored twice in his second game playing left field this spring, Franklin Gutierrez homered, and Matt Tuiasosopo and Mike Morse had two RBIs apiece for Seattle.

Jack Cust went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for Oakland while Travis Buck added an RBI triple.

Sweeney was on the A’s opening day roster last year but was released in September after missing 85 games and eventually undergoing microfracture surgery on both knees in June.
