LUANDA, ANGOLA (AP) - The Vatican’s spokesman says Pope Benedict XVI will express his sorrow for the deaths of two women trampled to death in a stampede at a stadium where he later addressed young Angolans.

The spokesman says the Vatican’s No. 2 official Cardinal Tarcisio Pertone will visit some 40 people in hospital who were injured in the crush on Saturday.

Spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi says the two 20-year-old women were trampled when gates opened at a Luanda stadium and died hours later in the hospital.

Benedict will express his sorrow before he addresses hundreds of thousands of people gathered for an open-air Mass Sunday that is the last major event of his first seven-day pilgrimage to Africa.
