MEXICO CITY (AP) - Mexico’s top law enforcement official says drug traffickers tried to attack his family last year but were stopped by bodyguards.

Public Safety Secretary Genaro Garcia Luna says federal agents detained several armed men who had followed his wife and daughter into a Mexico City gym last May.

He told the capital’s Radio Formula radio station on Friday that the men were members of a drug cartel and were arrested. He didn’t say which cartel they belonged to.

Garcia Luna is one of the top officials leading Mexico’s fight against drug traffickers.

More than 9,000 people have been killed in drug-related violence in Mexico since President Felipe Calderon launched the current crackdown on Dec. 1, 2006.
