DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES (AP) - Two Step Salsa has won the $1 million Godolphin Mile by holding off stablemate Gayego in the stretch.

Both horses are owned by Sheik Mohammed’s Godolphin Racing, giving Dubai’s ruler a 1-2 start in the opening race of Saturday’s $21 million Dubai World Cup program.

Two Step Salsa was ridden by Frankie Detorri, who moved his 4-year-old colt into the lead in the stretch and opened a clear lead. Gayego, who was 17th in last year’s Kentucky Derby, made a late run but came up short.

Rain fell earlier, but the the Nad al Sheba dirt track was listed as good.

Two Step Salsa came into the race off a victory on Feb. 20 in Dubai in his first start for trainer Saeed bin Suroor. The colt has won six of 10 career starts.
