SEATTLE (AP) - The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the National Science Foundation have announced a new collaboration to support innovative research to help farmers in the developing world.

The project announced Monday would infuse $48 million over five years into agriculture research. Scientists will be asked to propose projects that address drought, pests, disease, soil quality and other problems facing small farmers and their families.
