HOUSTON (AP) - A member of one of Mexico’s most notorious drug operations has pleaded guilty to threatening to kill two U.S. agents who were cornered and held at gunpoint.

Juan Carlos de La Cruz Reyna pleaded guilty to two counts of threatening agents and will be sentenced July 3. Another cartel member pleaded guilty Tuesday to money laundering.

The men were indicted in 2002 and extradited from Mexico late last year. Prosecutors say they were in the Gulf Cartel, one of Mexico’s most powerful trafficking gangs.

Prosecutors say de La Cruz Reyna was among a group of traffickers who cornered a Drug Enforcement Administration agent and an FBI agent in 1999 while they were meeting an informant in Mexico. The federal agents managed to talk their way out of the confrontation.
