A U.S. solider fatally shot five fellow troops Monday at an American base in Baghdad, military officials say.

Maj. Jose A. Lopez, a military spokesman, said the shootings occurred at about 2 p.m. at Camp Liberty, near Baghdad international airport, and the shooter is in custody.

He also said three others were wounded but could not give further details about the victims.

“All aspects of the incident are under investigation,” Maj. Lopez said.

The incident reportedly occurred at a stress clinic.

The Defense Department is scheduled to speak about the incident at 2 p.m. EDT.

The incident marked the highest, single-incident death toll for the U.S. military in Iraq since five U.S. soldiers were killed April 10 in an explosion in northern city of Mosul.

“Any time we lose one of our own, it affects us all,” said Col. John Robinson, a spokesman for Multi-National Corps-Iraq. “Our hearts go out to the families and friends of all the service members involved in this terrible tragedy.”
