AUTO REPAIR ADVICE: William asks: There’s a rattle in the engine on my 1998 Dodge Dakota when first started in the morning. Why does the rattle go away after the initial start, but come back the next morning? Answer: The hydraulic lifters are bleeding down. When this happens there is a small amount of play between the valve and rocker arm. As long as the sound is coming from the valve lifters and goes away after 30 seconds, there should be no harmful long-term effect. (Source: Ask the Auto Doctor, Motor Matters)
