This letter is in response to Terri Hammersmith’s claim of hypocrisy on the part of the United Service Organizations (“USO hypocrisy,” Letter, Monday). My husband and I are just two of the thousands of USO volunteers, and we see firsthand the amount of assistance given to helping the troops and their families by the USO. This includes all the celebrities who, even before the current administration, have visited and offered support to our troops. These celebrities showed their support for our troops by traveling around the world and visiting military bases and hospitals. They volunteered not because there were news cameras watching them, but because there weren’t. They did it for the right reason - because it was the right thing to do.

The USO has been a huge conduit for these celebrities, who, after one tour, sign up for additional opportunities to visit the troops. There’s no hypocrisy. It’s just that the cameras may be more visible now.
