A water-main break in D.C.’s Adams Morgan neighborhood will close a section of Florida Avenue Northwest for Wednesday’s evening rush hour.

The closed section is between California and 17th streets Northwest.

D.C. Department of Transportation spokesman John Lisle said Florida Avenue is buckled in several spots near V Street Northwest and that it will be “closed for some time.”

Mr. Lisle also said the city’s Water and Sewer Authority still was fixing the break as of late Wednesday afternoon.

The break occurred about 7:30 a.m., causing Florida Avenue to buckle and sending water into the basements of nearby homes. Firefighters from a U Street station a few blocks away helped residents secure their homes. There also are reports of gas leaks.

Florida Avenue is a curving but busy east-west route across the city — from H Street Northeast to P Street Northwest.
