From combined dispatches

No. 1 KANSAS 101, HOFSTRA 65: One of the most anticipated seasons in Kansas’ storied history got off to a high-flying start.

Xavier Henry hit five 3-pointers and scored 27 points to set a school freshman record, and the Jayhawks wore down the overmatched Pride for a victory Friday night in Lawrence.

Kansas is the favorite to win its second national title this decade and played like it against small-conference Hofstra, overcoming some occasional sloppy moments to win its 37th consecutive home opener and eighth straight season opener.

Sherron Collins added 23 points, and Cole Aldrich had 11 points and eight rebounds, lifting the Jayhawks to their 42nd straight victory at Allen Fieldhouse.

No. 9 DUKE 96, UNC GREENSBORO 62: Kyle Singler scored 14 of his 20 points in the first half, and the Blue Devils shrugged off the absence of two starters in a rout of the Spartans in Durham, N.C.

No. 12 UCONN 75, WILLIAM & MARY 66: Jerome Dyson scored 27 points as the Huskies opened their season with a victory over the Tribe in Storrs, Conn.

The senior guard was playing his first regular-season game since tearing the meniscus in his right knee Feb. 11.

No. 24 CLEMSON 84, PRESBYTERIAN 41: Freshman Noel Johnson had four of Clemson’s 14 3-pointers as the Tigers posted a season-opening victory over the Blue Hose in Clemson, S.C.

VIRGINIA 85, LONGWOOD 72: Sylven Landesberg scored 23 points, and Mustapha Farrakhan added 17 as the Cavaliers opened the Tony Bennett era at Virginia with a victory over the Lancers in Charlottesville.

The Cavaliers, who led 49-27 at halftime, were without sophomore center Assane Sene and senior forward Jamil Tucker.

Sene was suspended for the first three games of the season by Bennett “for conduct detrimental to the team.” The school announced Wednesday that Tucker was taking an indefinite personal leave of absence from the team.

The Lancers were led by Antwan Carter’s 18 points.

RADFORD 76, NAVY 65: Joey Lynch-Flohr and Art Parakhouski both had double-doubles to propel the Highlanders to a win over the Midshipmen in the season opener for both teams in Radford, Va.

Chris Harris paced Navy with 21 points.

GEORGE MASON 76, LIBERTY 72: Andre Cornelius had 17 points to lead the Patriots to a home victory over the Flames in their season opener at Patriot Center.

ST. FRANCIS 65, AMERICAN 61: Devin Sweetney scored 26 points as the Red Flash beat the Eagles in the season opener for both teams in Loretto, Pa.

St. Francis overcame a 31-20 halftime deficit and made five of six free throws in the final 30 seconds to preserve the victory.

Riley Grafft led American with 14 points.

INDIANA 83, HOWARD 60: Indiana freshmen Maurice Creek, Christian Watford and Derek Elston all scored in double figures, leading the Hoosiers to a rout of the Bison in Bloomington, Ind.
