ELKTON, Md. — Maryland State Police and Cecil County officials say a 13-year-old Elkton-area boy was killed when he was hit by a train as he crossed railroad tracks near his home.

Police say the teen was hit by an Amtrak Acela Express train as he crossed the tracks around 5:15 p.m. Sunday. The teen and two friends were returning to their homes after playing in a nearby wooded area.

County Emergency Services officials say 13-year-old Shawn Luther Kelly was hit by the train and pronounced dead on the scene.

The teen’s friends already had crossed the tracks when police say he was hit by the southbound train that was traveling faster than 100 mph.

The Cecil Whig reported that police, emergency workers, relatives and area residents searched for 20 minutes before the teen’s body was found.
