ANALYSIS/OPINION:

According to The Washington Times (“Obama: Health insurance mandate not a tax,” Nation, Monday), President Obama said that “we’re not going to have other people carrying your burdens for you any more than the fact that right now everybody in America, just about, has to get auto insurance.” Mr. Obama said on ABC’s “This Week,” “People say to themselves, that is a fair way to make sure that if you hit my car, that I’m not covering all the costs.”

Federally mandated health care is not the same as automobile liability insurance. First of all, the states — not the federal government — mandate liability insurance coverage for all motor vehicles.

It is required so that if a person causes damage to another’s property, then that damage is paid for by the insurance payments of the one causing the damage. Collision or comprehensive insurance, which covers the cost of a vehicle operator causing damage to his own vehicle, is not required.

Federally mandated health care for everyone doesn’t protect citizens from damage caused by others, but it does the exact opposite. If a young healthy citizen is forced to pay for health insurance, he or she is being forced to subsidize health care for someone older or less healthy.

Right now, people who believe they are healthy are allowed to take the risk of not paying for health care. That situation is exactly the same as car owners not being required to carry comprehensive or collision insurance to pay for damage they might do to their own vehicles.

Let’s face it. Just as with Social Security, we older and less healthy citizens, as well as the unemployed and destitute, need to be subsidized by the more numerous younger and employed healthy citizens.

It’s the way of all socialistic societies. It works well so long as there are always more younger healthy citizens than old, unemployed or poor citizens. By the time the young citizens get old and need health care, the coffers will be empty just as they are for Social Security. It’s a Ponzi scheme that only the federal government can carry out legally.

I just realized that I have been on the wrong side of this argument. It’s really going to be great because I’m over 60 and when the bills come due I’ll be long gone. Thank you, young Americans — this is finally a change I can live with!
