The Washington Redskins placed right guard Randy Thomas on the season-ending injured reserve list Tuesday, and his roster spot was filled by running back Anthony Alridge.

Alridge, who spent the past two weeks on the Houston Texans’ practice squad, was in camp with the Redskins, but a toe injury and fumbling issues contributed to his release in the final roster cutdown. The Redskins now have five running backs and one fullback on their 53-man roster. The team used five backs against St. Louis on Sunday.

Alridge spent last year on Denver’s injured reserve and was claimed by the Redskins in February with the hope he could return kicks and punts and serve as a change-of-pace back. In two preseason games, he carried 10 times for 46 yards but fumbled a kickoff return that Jacksonville took back for a touchdown.

Thomas tore his right triceps Sunday and is slated for surgery this week. The Redskins have nine offensive linemen on the roster.
