WHEATON, Md. (AP) — Montgomery County police said Sunday that an officer was killed when his police cruiser struck a tree while responding to an officer who needed backup.

Police have yet to release the officer’s name. He was a seven-year veteran of the department and worked the midnight shift.

Police said the officer was on the way to the scene of a large fight early Sunday when his car ran off the road and hit a tree. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.
