The planned community of Reston, dreamed up by Robert E. Simon more than 40 years ago, offers an idyllic lifestyle for residents, who are able to live, work and play in one community, as Mr. Simon envisioned.

Lakes, streams and woods wind among homes of every style and price range in Reston, where the amenities include community centers, swimming pools, tennis courts, walking trails, soccer fields and basketball courts. Village centers provide local shops, restaurants and services, while Reston Town Center includes a broader range of restaurants, movie theaters, an ice-skating rink and a venue for outdoor concerts in addition to a variety of stores.

For families, Reston offers a place where children can walk to school, play in the woods and participate in myriad community activities to fuel their interests. At Fox Mill Woods in Reston, a development of single-family homes built in the 1970s by the family-owned local builder Lipnick Construction Co., the homes rest on large lots with mature plants and trees.

While located within the boundaries of Reston, Fox Mill Woods is not part of the planned community, so residents do not pay homeowner association dues or follow Reston’s architectural rules. Residents can opt to join the Reston swimming pool system or participate in programs and enjoy swimming and tennis at the private Fox Mill Swim and Tennis Club.

The home at 2526 Spanish Moss Court in Fox Mill Woods, on the market for $675,000, is one of the largest homes in the neighborhood and occupies an ideal, nearly half-acre site at the end of a cul-de-sac, with woods and a stream running behind the lot. Built in 1973, this contemporary-style home includes features that were unusual for the time, such as an expansive center-island kitchen and two master baths.

The grounds include mature trees, shrubs and perennials, with a wide wood deck off the main level, which is connected to the lower-level patio by a spiral staircase. In addition to garden beds and a lawn, the backyard includes a fenced dog pen with a charming doghouse in the center. An asphalt drive in the front of the house leads to an oversized two-car garage with extra storage space.

The longtime owners of this home have fond memories of their children and the neighborhood children romping in the woods and setting up tents in the backyard for overnight “camping” trips.

Inside the home at Spanish Moss Court are three finished levels with ample space for family life, working at home and entertaining. The main level includes a foyer with marble flooring that leads into a step-down family room with hardwood flooring, a wood-burning fireplace and tall windows framing the view of the woods.

The formal living room extends from the front to the back of the home, with floor-to-ceiling windows at either end and plush carpet. The formal dining room has ample space for feeding a large Thanksgiving crowd and includes a chandelier and two floor-to-ceiling windows facing the front lawn and trees.

Whether entertaining formally or informally, these three rooms, along with the foyer, provide an easy flow and plenty of space for guests.

The kitchen and breakfast room, accessible from the family room, foyer and dining room, are clearly the spaces where close friends and family spend most of their time. The breakfast area has been enhanced with a bay window facing the woods. A sliding-glass door links this area to the wood deck, which has plenty of space for dining and relaxing outside.

The kitchen, renovated in 2004, has hardwood flooring, new white cabinets and granite counters. The oversized center island includes plenty of additional cabinets as well as counter space. The kitchen has a double window over the sink and is accented with blue-tile backsplashes.

Upstairs, the master bedroom provides expansive space for a sitting area and has windows on two walls. The first of two dressing areas and full baths includes two double-door closets and a renovated bath with a pedestal sink, a glass-enclosed shower and a window. The second bath has a large dressing area, a walk-in closet and a renovated bath with ceramic-tile flooring, a combination tub and shower and a vanity.

Three additional bedrooms on this level. Each has a double-door closet and is generously proportioned. The front bedroom, overlooking the lawn and trees, has two closets and two windows and currently functions as a study. The other two bedrooms on this level overlook the backyard and trees.

The upper level also has a renovated third full bath off the hall and a linen closet.

The finished lower level, which is aboveground, has plenty of space for multiple purposes. The central recreation room has a gas fireplace and two sets of sliding glass doors to the patio and spiral staircase to the deck.

Adjacent to the recreation room is an open game room with plenty of space for a pingpong or billiards table. A laundry and utility room is nearby, with another door to the backyard.

The lower level also has renovated full bath. Next to the bath is a den with a private exterior entrance. Just past the den is a workshop. The den easily could be converted to a fifth bedroom by turning the workshop into a walk-in closet, creating an in-law, au-pair or nanny suite. Alternatively, the den also functions well as a home office, particularly because the exterior door enables visitors to enter directly into the office rather than the home.

No matter how the spaces are used in this Fox Mill Woods home, the owners should appreciate not only the flexibility of their home, but also their proximity to the natural beauty of the woods and the urban-style amenities of Reston Town Center.
