ANALYSIS/OPINION:

As the latest episode in the Marion Barry saga surfaces (“Report: Ex-mayor violated laws,” American Scene, Nation, Feb. 17) and the Ward 8 council member apologizes about his improper contract but not his improper conduct, I am reminded of a statement made many years ago by writer and radio host Carl T. Rowan.

Mr. Rowan said the unrelenting and undaunted support of Mr. Barry by many members of the black community was a case of “he’s a scoundrel but he’s our scoundrel.”

I wonder if, after all these years and Mr. Barry’s recent conflict-of-interest-rule violation, this remains the prevailing attitude.
