The HGTV program “Designed to Sell” shows homeowners how to de-clutter and add pizazz to their home to attract buyers. In December, a contemporary-style home in Pimmit Hills, a neighborhood in Falls Church, Va., was featured on the program, which focused on updating the kitchen and adding excitement to the upper-level bedrooms.

On the market for $600,000, the home at 1915 Hillside Drive has plenty of enticing features inside and out. The Pimmit Hills neighborhood includes one- and two-level homes built in the 1950s, with a few standout homes that have been expanded and remodeled in recent years. This one, while spruced up outside, including a charming covered front porch, saves most of the excitement for inside.

The quarter-acre property includes a fully fenced backyard with a deck, lawn and plenty of space for gardening and entertaining. The property has a detached two-car garage and an asphalt drive.

The owners have enjoyed entertaining in their home, treating their guests to gourmet food and taking advantage of the open floor plan for cocktail parties and seated dinners. The backyard and deck have plenty of space for outdoor parties, and the owners even have space for a large trampoline in one corner of the yard.

The remodeled and expanded rooms blend seamlessly with the rest of the home. The front door opens into an expansive open foyer made more exciting visually with a peaked ceiling and hardwood flooring. Most of the home includes recessed or track lighting.

Just off the foyer, double wood doors with beveled glass inserts open into a home office with recessed lighting and two windows. This space could be converted to a fifth bedroom if future residents need extra rooms for guests or family members.

The wide foyer, lined with windows on one side, links the front door with the open kitchen and extends to the living room at the back of the house. The owners use the area just off the kitchen as their formal dining area, but this space also could be used as an extension of the living room.

HGTV designers focused their attention on opening the kitchen and adding some dazzling features, including track lighting snaking across the center of the ceiling. The kitchen has maple cabinets, granite counters and hardwood flooring that extends into the space from the hall. Upgraded stainless steel appliances add shine to the space. A granite breakfast bar adds extra space for casual meals and food preparation, along with a space for guests to enjoy helping or watching the chef.

Adjacent to the kitchen is a breakfast nook with pendant lighting overhead and a window. HGTV added a built-in bench to two walls of this space, maximizing the seating area. The bench conveys with the home.

Just beyond the breakfast area, a small hall leads to a first-floor bedroom at the front of the house. Perfect for a nanny or in-law suite, this private bedroom wing is being used as a second office. The built-in desk can be removed easily for future residents, although the owners will leave it in place if buyers prefer. The room includes windows on two sides and a closet.

Adjacent to this office/bedroom is a full bath that has been renovated with ceramic tile flooring and a pedestal sink.

At the back of this home, the living room includes a sliding glass door that leads to a wood deck and the backyard. The living room includes a ceiling fan.

The carpeted, open staircase to the upper level divides the living room from a cozy den, which has a double window facing the backyard. Just off the den is a laundry room.

Upstairs, the master suite has been transformed dramatically by HGTV-inspired designs. The bedroom has picture windows in two walls, but the owners added a bright red wood headboard for their bed that covers one of them. The headboard will convey to the new owners, if desired. The master bedroom has two double-door closets and a private full bath.

The master bath includes ceramic tile flooring, a niche for open shelving and an oversized ceramic tile shower. Contemporary touches include frosted-glass medicine cabinets flanking the sink, open shelving on one wall and a curving wood vanity tucked into one corner.

Two generously sized secondary bedrooms on this level have hardwood flooring, large windows and a closet in each. Skylights bring more natural light into each of these rooms. All three bedrooms on this level have a ceiling fan.

The upper level has a second fully renovated bath with ceramic tile flooring.

In addition to the attractions found inside this home, the location in Pimmit Hills offers residents plenty of advantages. Hillside Drive is a cul-de-sac with a park at one end. Shopping centers are located nearby on Route 7, with grocery stores, restaurants and other amenities. For commuting, residents can reach Tysons Corner within minutes, along with the West Falls Church Metro station, Interstate 66 and the Beltway.
