WASHINGTON | Vlad Moldoveanu scored seven of his 20 points in a key second-half stretch and American University held on for a 71-64 victory over Holy Cross on Saturday.

Stephen Lumpkins scored 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds for the Eagles (5-15, 2-3 Patriot League) to help coach Jeff Jones earn his 300th career victory, including 154 while at American.

Devin Brown scored 14 of his 19 points in the first half for Holy Cross (5-15, 2-3), which fell to 1-9 on the road. Andrew Beinert added 15 points and R.J. Evans scored 14 for the Crusaders, who led only once after halftime.

Moldoveanu scored on an up-and-under layup midway through the second half, following that score with a 3-pointer from the right wing and another inside basket to completed a 9-0 run to put American ahead 48-38.

Holy Cross responded when Beinert’s basket and foul shot closed it to 59-54, Brown’s 3-pointer from the top of the arc made it 65-61, and R.J. Evans’ turnaround jumper on a three-point play made it 67-64 with 59 seconds left.

But the Eagles, who were 20-for-32 from the foul line, hit six of their last eight free throws to preserve the victory.
