LANSING, Mich. | Detroit Pistons executive Joe Dumars says he has “firmly declined” suggestions that he run for the Michigan governorship.

The Pistons president of basketball operations said Wednesday in a statement that he’s flattered by the requests to run, but that he’s not a politician and has no plans to seek public office.

The NBA Hall of Fame member had been mentioned as a possible Democratic candidate after Democratic front-runner John Cherry dropped out of the governor’s race early this month.

State Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith remains the only Democrat officially in the race, although others are considering it.

Half a dozen Republicans are running for their party’s nomination.
