A man who jumped out of a crashed car and stole a police cruiser in Upper Marlboro is dead after crashing the police cruiser into a tree.

Prince George’s County police said the bizarre incident unfolded about 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

Investigators said 28-year-old Kenneth Ray Taylor stole the police cruiser after officers stopped to check on a single-car crash near Croom Road. Mr. Taylor then crashed the police cruiser into a tree, and the car burst into flames.

Police officers tried to extinguish the fire but needed help from county firefighters. Mr. Taylor was pronounced dead shortly after.

Accident investigators are trying to determine the cause of the original car crash.
