The attempt last Saturday by a terrorist to kill scores of Americans in Times Square was the fourth major Islamist attack on the U.S. homeland since President Obama took office (“Obama: ‘We will not be terrorized,’ ” Web, News, Tuesday). Before this latest try, there was the fatal shooting at the recruiting station in Little Rock, Ark. (successful), the Fort Hood, Texas, massacre (successful) and the attempt to blow up a trans-Atlantic flight over Detroit (unsuccessful).

All of these acts share one defining characteristic: All were carried out by Islamists acting in the name of Islam. Although the perpetrators’ personal circumstances differed (some were born and raised in the United States, some were naturalized citizens, some acted ostensibly alone, some with the support of foreign networks or individuals, etc.) all the perpetrators had a hatred of America and its way of life and were perfectly willing to wipe out as many Americans as they could because they believed Islam dictated as much.

President Obama and his administration have worked very hard to minimize and gloss over this basic fact for reasons known only to themselves. The war on terror that the government is constantly talking about is really a war against radical Islam. Terrorists, Islamists, jihadists - whatever we call such people, they all operate by the same extremist rubric and use its teachings to justify their vile actions. Unless we refute radical Islam and change this mindset, these attacks will increase and more and more Americans will die, no matter how stringent our security measures.

So, Mr. President, until you and your administration go on the offensive against extremist Islam, which is the root cause of the attacks, we most certainly will continue to be terrorized - in our own land.
