RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The polls are open across the state for an election that has Virginians picking their congressional representatives and voting on three proposed constitutional amendments.

Voting began Tuesday at 6 a.m., and the polls close at 7 p.m. State Board of Elections spokeswoman Heather West says there have been no major problems reported at polling stations so far. She says a power outage in the Rappahannock area was quickly resolved.

Key races include the 5th District congressional contest, in which Democrat Tom Periello is trying to hold on to his seat against Republican challenger Robert Hurt.

More than 135,000 voters had applied for absentee voting. Their ballots also are due to local registrars by 7 p.m.
