WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. James E. Clyburn, South Carolina Democrat, said on Sunday that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has a place in the Democratic leadership after Republicans take control next year.

Mr. Clyburn is downplaying the emerging contest between himself and Rep. Steny H. Hoyer, Maryland Democrat, for the No. 2 spot when Democrats become the minority party. Mr. Clyburn said he plans to keep his current job as whip.

Mr. Hoyer currently is the House majority leader, the No. 2 post in Democratic leadership, but he stands to be demoted if Mrs. Pelosi, California Democrat, moves from being speaker to minority leader. Mr. Clyburn said he’s not willing to step down as whip to make room for Mr. Hoyer.

Mr. Clyburn appeared on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”
