MARTINSVILLE, Va. (AP) — Henry County authorities say one man was killed and another wounded when a military shell exploded.

Fire Marshal Rodney Howell told the Martinsville Bulletin that pieces of the 8-inch-long shell’s casing were found at the scene of Thursday’s explosion.

The blast killed 25-year-old Michael Rafael Venable, and 26-year-old Marcus Shawn Chism was treated at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Howell said military experts from Fort Belvoir were summoned to help with the investigation.

Howell would not speculate on the age of the shell, how it got in the shed where the explosion occurred, or whether other munitions were stored there.
