WALDORF, Md. | Maryland State Police say two men picking up trash on a Charles County median were killed when an SUV went off the highway and hit them.

Police spokesman Greg Shipley says three State Highway Administration contract workers had mowed the median of state Route 228 in the Waldorf area on Thursday and were picking up trash when a car went off the road and hit two of them. He says the men were pronounced dead on the scene.

Shipley says the preliminary investigation shows the driver, 24-year-old Yuri M. F. Vielot Jr. of Hyattsville, fell asleep before the crash. He says Vielot didn’t appear to have any external injuries, but he was taken to Fort Washington Hospital because he said he was shaken up.

Police are investigating.
