KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — A boat owner in eastern Congo said on Monday that 72 people were missing after his boat capsized, possibly because of bad weather and high winds.

Owner Maneno Muzuka said seven survivors were recovered after the boat capsized early Monday on Lake Kivu. Bukavu town security chief Jeanmarie Bwishe said 80 people were on board.

Congo is a vast country of jungles and huge rivers in Central Africa with few paved roads. Many people prefer to take boats even if they do not know how to swim.

The boats are often in poor repair and filled beyond capacity, and the industry is not well-regulated.
