Playwright David Mamet’s conversion to conservatism proves that knowledge is a powerful thing (“David Mamet turns right,” Commentary, Thursday).

It is unfortunate but true that most Americans do not understand nor were they taught in public schools during the past 50 years that America’s founding principles are what make this a great and free nation. That, I believe, is a large part of the reason why America is in decline today: Many Americans don’t know what they are voting for because of lack of knowledge.

Our public school system must return to teaching our children the principles laid out in our Constitution, ones that ensure “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” We must instill in our young the biblical precepts on which our Constitution is based. If we fail to pass on our founding principles to the next generation, our greatness will be lost. If we cannot keep those principles alive, we are doomed to fail as Benjamin Franklin said so succinctly. We will forfeit our free-enterprise system and the hope of attaining the American dream for ourselves.

Mr. Mamet was given books by his rabbi on the great conservative thinkers of our time, and these exposed to him the hypocrisy of the political left. Mr. Mamet had a “road to Damascus” experience that led him to re-evaluate his ideas on the free market, communism and leftist ideology. In Mr. Mamet’s new book, “The Secret Knowledge: On the Dismantling of American Culture,” he writes about the “great wickedness of Liberalism.”

Welcome back to reality, Mr. Mamet. I hope we can look forward to some great Hollywood movies with conservative philosophies in the near future. I hope that you will be an advocate for conservatism in Hollywood and perhaps pass those books on to Steven Spielberg.
