A 24-year-old D.C. resident was fatally shot early Sunday near the Washington Convention Center, and the suspect was held by witnesses, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

When officers arrived at the scene at about 2 a.m., witnesses had detained the gunman, identified as Alexis Pineda, 24. He was arrested and charged with second-degree murder while armed, according to police who recovered a gun from the scene, in the 1200 block of 11th Street Northwest, just three blocks from the downtown center.

The victim has been identified as Jose Hernandez-Romero, 24. He was taken to a hospital, where he died, police said.

Officials have not released information about the circumstances of the shooting or the relationship between the suspect and the victim.
