Sometimes life takes precedent over practice, and that seems to be the case this week with Alex Ovechkin.

The Washington Capitals captain left the team Monday to be with his family in Moscow after the death of an uncle.

Ovechkin is expected to be back for opening night Saturday when the Caps host the Carolina Hurricanes at Verizon Center.

The team did not want to release any more information about the circumstances other than to say the death was a close relative.
