President Obama went hungry Thursday after attending a luncheon meeting with Senate Republicans on Capitol Hill without a designated food taster.

Sen. Susan Collins, the Maine Republican who was host of the event, said the president wasn’t able to touch the catering.

“Unfortunately, you know, the president can’t,” Mrs. Collins said when asked if Mr. Obama ate at the meeting, according to the Daily Caller. “He looked longingly at it. He honestly did look longingly at it, but apparently he has to have essentially a taster, and I pointed out to him that we were all tasters for him, that if the food had been poisoned, all of us would have keeled over so, but he did look longingly at it, and he remarked that we have far better food than the Democrats do, and I said that was because I was hosting.”

Keeping in line with policy discretion, the U.S. Secret Service always has refused to confirm the presence of a “food taster” to the president.
