MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The council planning the Southwest light rail project recommends shallow tunnels for the trains in the Kenilworth Corridor of Minneapolis.

The recommendation keeps freight trains in the corridor instead of diverting them to St. Louis Park. It’s the same conclusion project staff and an advisory board reached in October before Gov. Mark Dayton ordered the Metropolitan Council to slow planning and build a consensus with city leaders in Minneapolis.

Minnesota Public Radio (https://bit.ly/1iWrX4M ) says an advisory board of metropolitan leaders will vote Wednesday on the plan to construct the shallow tunnels. An independent study commissioned by the council concluded the tunnels would have little impact on nearby lakes.
