TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - A Terre Haute man has died after sustaining burns near a backyard fire pit.

Assistant Chief Shawn Keen of the Terre Haute Police Department says the man died after being airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital Friday night. His name was not immediately released.

Keen tells the Tribune-Star (https://bit.ly/1m36mM1 ) that a woman said she and the man had been sitting in the backyard at a fire pit when she went into a home to answer the telephone. Another family member soon arrived and reported seeing something on fire in the backyard.

Keen says witnesses reported the victim had been consuming alcohol and people were gathering to celebrate the victim’s upcoming birthday.
