FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - The Indiana Department of Transportation says construction of an innovative traffic interchange aimed at improving traffic flow is scheduled to begin Monday in Fort Wayne.
The agency says the Dupont Road exit on Interstate 69 will be the state’s first diverging diamond interchange. The Journal Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/OQ7C6u ) such interchanges allow vehicles to enter highways without turning left in front of oncoming traffic.
INDOT says earth work on the ramps will last until mid-May and the project is expected to be completed by late October. A similar design is planned for a new I-65 interchange in the southern Indianapolis suburb of Greenwood.
Diverging diamond interchanges are being used in at least seven other states. Officials say the design is more compact and generally less expensive than traditional cloverleaf interchanges.
