DEERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A 29-year-old central Michigan farmer has turned himself in to authorities after 71 calves were found dead beneath snow and hay on his property near Mount Pleasant.

WPBN-WTOM reports Tuesday that John Montross has been released from custody after posting a $3,000 bond.

Montross of Deerfield Township was charged last week with abandoning and cruelty to animals. The felony carries a maximum penalty of four years in prison and a $5,000 fine. His next court date is Monday.

The Associated Press could not determine Tuesday if Montross has an attorney. No telephone number was listed under his name.
