OAK ISLAND, N.C. (AP) - The town council on Oak Island has decided to extend a moratorium on the construction of large houses until June 16.

Town officials say they need more information about the impact on sewer service for homes with more than six bedrooms before changing the ban.

Public Works Director David Kelly said an expert will meet with the council next month to answer sewer questions.

The town has been working for months to develop ordinances that restrict new vacation rental houses after getting complaints about a 15-bedroom, 12 bathroom house approved on the island’s west end..

Town Attorney Brian Edes says he’s concerned that there needs to be progress on the issue to avoid possible legal challenges to the moratorium on large homes.
