DETROIT (AP) - Ex-Wayne County Sheriff Warren Evans is among those running against incumbent Robert Ficano for the post of Wayne County executive.

Evans, who also served as Detroit police chief for a year before being fired in part for being romantically involved with a subordinate, filed petitions to run. Word of his candidacy came Monday, the same day Ficano held an event to kick off his re-election campaign.

Ficano is seeking his fourth term. He says he’s had success with job creation, improvements to Cobo Center and other efforts. Problems in recent years have drawn attention, including a scrapped jail project that ran nearly $100 million over budget.

Other announced candidates include state Rep. Phil Cavanagh of Redford Township, County Commissioner Kevin McNamara of Belleville and Westland Mayor Bill Wild.
