A popular spring break party near the University of California, Santa Barbara campus turned violent Saturday, resulting in more than 50 arrests and 6 injured police officers.
Hundreds of law enforcement officers spent Saturday night and early Sunday restoring order to the streets of Isla Vista, a local ABC affiliate reported.
At about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, a campus police officer was hit in the head with a backpack that contained large bottles of alcohol. The violence escalated when a sheriff’s deputy was hit in the head with a brick.
Street signs were vandalized, mattresses set on fire and property, including law enforcement vehicles, was damaged, amid the riot centered around Deltopia, police said.
Authorities used tear gas, pepper spray, flash bang grenades and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. At least 56 people were taken into custody and at least 44 people were hospitalized, CBS Los Angeles reported.
The riot reportedly began after authorities responded to two stabbings in the area, but it’s not yet clear what prompted the disturbance.
An estimated 15,000 people attended Deltopia on Saturday.
